Guerrilla Pizza
$Guerrilla Pizza began as a pop-up concept, earning a loyal following at the Hard Hat Lounge before regrouping and opening its own brick-and-mortar location on the ground floor of Downtown's Soho Lofts building. Michigan-born Chef Robby Cunningham's restaurant specializes in rectangular Detroit-style pies, cooked in metal pans with cheese spreading to the edges and even running down the sides for a crispy crunch to balance the thick, chewy, pillow-like crust.
Food and Loathing co-host Al Mancini calls it “the valley’s top destination for Detroit-style pizza” while food blogger LeAnne Notabartolo names Guerrilla Pizza a top pizza spot of any kind — period.
Some recipes are traditional, but most are indulgent with a sense of fun. Try the BBQ-inspired Pig Show with pulled pork, pickles, BBQ sauce and jalapeño-ranch or Burger Time, featuring ingredients that wouldn't look out of place on a Big Mac (ground chuck, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, onion and its own kind of special sauce).
Side items include chili, wings and salads, plus the same pizza dough reimagined as breadsticks, cheese bread and knots. Those with a sweet tooth should save room for the Dutch Caramel Apple Pizza, an irresistible dessert with apple pie filling, nuts, vanilla icing and caramel sauce. Guerrilla Pizza displays a continued loyalty to Michigan with plenty of Faygo sodas and Superman ice cream in stock.
